Efforts to provide non-compulsory antisemitism training have failed. Those who need it most simply won't attend.
Learning about the holocaust is important. But the kind of hatred against Jewish people now is often unrelated to World War II. The old tropes of "Jews control everything" or "Kill the Jews" have been replaced with "Zionists control everything" and "Kill the Zionists" and in making this singular word change schools seem ill equipped to respond.
Teachers must attend mandatory PD sessions which take pace approximately 3-7 times per year. Included in these sessions are training on anti-black racism and work place safety Amon other subjects Teachers are often trained on anti-indigenous discrimination. Notwithstanding that Antisemitism is the most common discrimination on a per capita basis and that many boards are reporting an increase in antisemitic incidents, mandatory antisemitism training has never taken place.
Why is such a small minority experiencing such a disproportionate amount of hate? How can Jewish educators and students be expected to advocate for themselves? Please do your part to take action now.
