We are licensed teachers in schools across Ontario, and a few in other provinces as well, that want to work in an education system where hatred and bigotry is not taught or demonstrated. We want to feel safe at work and we want Jewish educators and students from all backgrounds to feel safe in schools
Antisemitism is the oldest bigotry, our community is among the smallest minorities and yet police reported statistics confirm the hate motivated crimes against Jewish people is still the most prevalent and increasing each year. The situation in schools is not much different. However, we are prevented from speaking out publicly by our employers. Further, the unions that are supposed to represent us will not hear our concerns about antisemitism.
MCAPD stands for MANDATORY CONTEMPORARY ANTISEMITISM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
In most public school boards, teachers receive multiple sessions of mandatory professional development each year. Anti-black racism has been one of the mandatory sessions as has anti-indigenous discrimination notwithstanding that antisemitism in schools is often more prevalent. Mandatory PD is essential to ensure that those who need the training actually attend it. Sadly, our experience has been that when antisemitism training is offered as optional many if not most teachers leave.
